Retro Hangover is a podcast in which your hosts, Shane Koski and Chris Coplien, spotlight a different piece of video game history (be it a specific title, console, company, or person) each episode. They provide a brief background, discuss their personal experiences, as well as their favorites aspects of the item in question. Oh, and there's beer.
Zombies! Neighbors! Giant babies...? We continue our annual Spooptoberfest with a visit from the one and only MaskedKeaton (Discord quiz master extraordinaire) to chat about this run-'n'-gun cult classic from LucasArts!

Not every big bad comes packaged with a well designed encounter. Sometimes the difficulty balance is out of whack, sometimes the mechanics are just poorly thought out, and sometimes it feels like the developers forgot that games should be fun. It's the battle of the Game Boy Goliaths! Capping off the first round of the tournament, the Paisano Plumber's second handheld outing squares off against the (eventually) Pink Puffball's big debut. Hey, it's kinda like our own little Smash Bros!
The Master System (or Mark III depending on where in the globe you hail from) seemed like it got overshadowed by Nintendo and their NES, at least in North America. A bit of a shame, really, since Sega's console was home to some quality experiences, a handful of which we reminisce about today.

With the preliminaries done and dusted, the time has come to kick this baby off in earnest, and we're starting with a banger. Spicy space strategy game or top-down action adventure, who will emerge victorious? Only one way to find out!

Well, this is an odd couple, isn't it? What better way to close out the prelims than with a head-to-head involving a traditional platformer and a questionably offensive FMV game? The early nineties were wild, man.
Even with our favorite pastime there's bound to be things that just get on our nerves; hell, AVGN made an entire career out of it. We're not going to steal his schtick, but we do have a few grievances to air about video games and those who play them.

Honestly, Ramus is goals. Not only did he singlehandedly kick off Alex's journey to Dragonmastery but he achieved his lifelong dream of owning a shop and just... Stopped there. The world was in peril, but did Ramus care? No! His life was about mercantile, and he was content.

*Teleports behind you* "It's nothing personal, kid." OK, it hurt just to type that. Today we don our black leather dusters and matching fedoras to rank our broodiest, moodiest, too-cool-for-schooliest masters of the blade, and we only had to use 10% of our power to do it.

Surprisingly, this is the first time we've ever done a Game of the Year episode. Who knows, maybe we'll make it a thing from now on. Anyway, with so many games played this year, which ones will garner our coveted top slots? Barbie's Dream House? Garfield Kart? The competition is fierce.

As is Yuletide tradition around these parts, we kick off December with a holiday-themed title. Sort of. OK, the first movie involved Christmas, so this is close enough. Holster your humbug, Scrooge, 'cause we think you're in for a treat with this one.

The phrase "lost in translation" is well known for a reason, and boy do these games sure embody it well. Shane pushes through a nasty head cold to bring this one to you because, much like spice (and his nose), the content must flow. What are our picks for most confusingly curated content? It's not something your average gamer thinks about too often, but we really ought to be glad Smell-O-Vision isn't a thing. A lot of the environs we traverse in our digital adventures would undoubtedly be an assault on our olfactory senses, which is to say: they sure would stink. We count down our top picks for video game levels that most definitely have their own unique funk.

Since the turtle boys what cut 'em no slack are back in the news with the recent release of Shredder's Revenge, we thought we ought to go back and take a look at Konami's NES port of their smash hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade brawler. Let's... Just say that we're both real glad Turtles in Time exists.

Grab your shovel and old-timey lamplight, 'cause we're a-goin' grave digging to unearth game series we think deserve better than an untimely and premature end. At least one of you need to stand watch and keep an eye out for the fuzz, OK?

We suppose the title of this implies we have some modicum of shame... We think you'll find that to be a lie. But if we were to feel guilty about some of our choices, these would be it.

Much like Thanos, this episode was inevitable. Proper pronunciation be damned, we all know how we'd say this game's name. It only seems fitting, then, that the home of Gorp the Eggplant Dragon give it a dedicated review. The next Patron-selected Top 5 topic is here, and that means it's time for us to weeb out about which of the many JRPG weapons out there we would like in our homes. The definition of "weapon" might have gotten stretched a bit by someone, but our lawyer advised us to claim that fault lies entirely with the Patrons' lack of specificity.

It's not every day we talk to a Guinness World Record holder... Well, OK, that's not entirely true since we chat with Willie pretty often, but it's of particular importance for this episode since said record is for none other than Sin & Punishment for the Nintendo 64!
A title that never made it stateside in its initial run, many may not be familiar with this futuristic sci-fi rail shooter but we're here to fix that. Don't say RHP never taught ya nothin'.

You asked for it, and here it is: a brand new series, releasing on alternate weeks from the main episodes, effectively making RHP (finally) a weekly show! Since the new format centers around top 5 lists, we decided to dub it The Flight (beer aficionados will understand the connection). Long-time fans of the show may also realize this doubles as a callback to the early days of RHP.
This week's Flight sees us discussing our personal list of 5 games we feel we put too much time into. There are some spicy takes here, so be sure to tune in!

The latest Patron-selected topic is here, and it sees us veering off the beaten path to pontificate on a subject that harkens back to our very first episode: digital vs. physical game distribution. This time, we talk more about the impact an all-digital gaming landscape may have on the future of our favorite hobby, and whether it's looking bright or bleak.
To assist us in this, the one and only Nintendhost LPTyger makes his triumphant return to the show!

Another Patreon timed exclusive coming your way! This time, Chris sits down with Ozzy Garcia, formerly of the Region Free Gamers podcast, to find out what it was like being a young gamer living in Cuba.
Mentioned in this episode:

If you'd like to hear more great content such as this before anyone else, consider becoming a patron of the show today!
This episode marks a few firsts for the show: the first time in awhile Chris and Shane are not joined by a guest (remember when we never had guests? Crazy times), the first episode to be posted on our brand spankin' new hosting platform Captivate.fm, and the first time we've talked about Wolfenstein 3D!
Tug on your combat boots, grease your barrels, and join us for some good ol' fashioned Nazi bashin'!
Here it is, the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the final showdown of the King of Games 2000 tournament! Many a good game has been lost, blood and tears have been shed, and these two titles have emerged to duke it out one last time for ultimate supremacy.
Listen, the title isn’t necessarily a commentary on the game’s quality, just an objective statement that Kirby does in fact suck. A lot. It’s like his thing. At any rate, the illustrious Adam Blank of Remember the Game podcast joins us to celebrate three decades of pink puff power by reviewing the cartridge that started it all: Kirby’s Dream Land!
The penultimate entry into the King of Games 2000 tournament is upon us! Will The Sims woo-hoo their way into the finals, or will MvC2 pull off a combo break and clinch victory?
We’re doing things a little different for this episode; one might say we’re turning everything… upside down. Right, once you’re finished booing at that joke, jump on in and listen to the first publicly-released episode of our timed Patron-exclusive series, Growing Up Gaming! Chris chats with some of our beloved community members from Down Under to find out what it was like being a gamer in the Outback.
Beloved RHP community member MaskedLlama finally gets his Fatal Frame episode, but not quite in the way he expected. It’s Japanese horror… Aussie style!
Well… Here it is. The final showdown before the semi-finals. We suspect that, regardless of the outcome, someone is walking away from this one less than thrilled. Will it be the grandpappy of ARPGs or the definitive life simulator that moves on to greater glory? Only one way to find out!
The latest quarterly Patron poll winner is here, and it’s the actually-not-terrible licensed game Beetle Adventure Racing! We’re joined on this expedition by fellow sensible consumer-grade vehicle enthusiast Try4ce from the YouTube channel My Life in Gaming, so pack your rucksack and prepare for… ADVENTURE!
Sweet tricks or trick shots? That’s what we’re debating in this go-round of the King of Games 2000 tournament. Will the counter-terrorists win or will the skater bois pop shove-it right out of this competition?
The one and only Ryan Trainor of Banzai Chat drops in to once again talk Fist of the North Star, this time about the 2005 arcade fighter. Come get a You Wa Shock to your system that may or may not improve your gastrointestinal health (results not guaranteed)!
The clash of the sequels is here! The final match of the first round is upon us. Who will move on to the next bracket: a game many consider to be the best 2D fighter of all time, or the sequel to one of the most well-known D&D video games ever?
We are super stoked to have the one and only Joe Redifer of Game Sack and good friend of the show Paul from Region Free Gamers on to discuss Ys Book I & II, a tandem of JRPGs from Nihon Falcom that one might consider to be the grandpappies of the action RPG genre (and took the term "facerolling" quite literally). In an unexpected turn of events, this episode also serves as a cautionary tale about blindly trusting those fancy HD remasters that all the kids are into these days, so tune in to find out more!
We honestly can't wait to see the reaction to this one. A somewhat small but very steadfast fanbase going up against one of the most cross-demographically appealing games ever? Surely nothing can go wrong here.
He spins, he jumps, he might occasionally slip right off a ledge even though you definitely didn't mean for him to... It's Crash Bandicoot! Eric from the Side Questing podcast joins us as our special guest this episode to discuss Crash, the would-be wombat who is (probably) singularly responsible for making everyone outside of Australia aware that bandicoots exist. Take that, Nat Geo.
A monkey-tailed boy going toe-to-toe with a trained British female operative... Definitely a sensible match-up. Listen, we just follow the tournament rules, you get to enjoy the ridiculous results. And hey, if you haven't listened to Match 3 yet, what are you even doing!? Go over to the Region Free Gamers podcast and get caught up!
Quit beatin' yer gums and stow that sugar report, Lieutenant! Your best gal is gonna have to wait, because ol' Uncle Adolph is up to no good and it's our duty to stop him. Your usual RHP compliment will be augmented on this mission by none other than Major Josh Covel of the Still Loading division, so taxi on up and get that devil's piano in good working order, 'cause you're going to need it!
Everyone OK? Has the salt washed off from the first match-up? Great, because we're back with the next battle of Round 1 of King of Games 2000: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 faces off against WWF No Mercy. Will it be kickflips or piledrivers? Listen to find out, brother! Wait, wait... You haven't listened to Match 1? Well then get on over to our friends the Region Free Gamers podcast and subscribe to make sure you get every saucy minute of the King of Games 2000 tournament!
The Blue Rogues take flight in this episode of RHP, accompanied by special guest Kelly from our friends the Region Free Gamers! As if that wasn't cool enough, this release marks the obnoxiously triumphant return of Chris' signature bellowing intro. You asked for it, and we delivered so get your volume knobs ready, folks, because it's back, baby!
We are super psyched to put this one out there for you beautiful people. We had the opportunity to sit down with Andy from Mega Cat Studios and chat about the most excellent work they do developing and releasing original titles for retro systems like the NES and Genesis, along with the myriad other projects they have in their repertoire. We had a lot of fun with this one, and we think you will too!
What do you do with a popular film franchise license and a warehouse of unused arcade boards? Make a loosely-related beat-'em-up, of course! Keith of The Main Quest podcast joins us to talk about everyone's favorite Christmas game: Die Hard Arcade!
If you know anything about Earthbound, you are probably not terribly surprised that this episode is a bit longer than usual; there's just so much to discuss! Arnie of the Region Free Gamers podcast joins the show to pontificate with us about one of the most fondly-remembered JRPGs of the 16-bit era. If you need to take a break during the show, why not take a moment and call your mom? Don't want to get homesick, after all.
Get it, 'cause she's got tank controls? Whatever, our moms think we're funny. Anyway, this year marks the 25th anniversary of Ms. Croft's inaugural spelunking spectacular, so we thought: what better time to delve back into this early 3D adventure and see how its held up?
We wrap up Spooptober with a doozy. Not only are we talking about a notoriously tough as nails platformer, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but we are also joined by singer / songwriter / self-professed Genesis fangirl Saniyé! When the kingdom doth get yeeted, shall Arthur saveth it from certain doom? (Hint: highly unlikely since most of us can't beat this game).
We're coming out the other side of the big hundo with the next entry into this year's annual Spooptoberfest: the cult classic horror FPS Clive Barker's Undying! Shane has a lot of fond memories of this one, but does it stand the test of time? Dive on into the murky depths with special guest host Ozzy (formerly of the Region Free Gamers) to find out!
Holy pixels, Batman: we made it to episode 100! As far as totally arbitrary milestones go, this is a huge one for us, so we're celebrating by doing something a bit different and answering any and all questions submitted by you, our wonderful listeners!
How, precisely, is a raven like a writing desk? We don't know, but it probably has something to do with murder. We're kicking off our annual Spooptober with a twisted take on a much-beloved tale of imagination and fantasy: American McGee's Alice! Joining us once again, this time to chat about Cheshire Cats, is the one and only Lynnsey!
Man, the 80s and early 90s sure did have a thing for vigilante justice, didn't they? Special guests Toby and Goobz of the Secret Levels Podcast enter the battle, so lace up the boots of a few young, hot-headed ex-cops with nothing but righteous vengeance on their minds and take to the streets... OF RAGE.
Kade Call of the Gaming Memories podcast joins us once again, this time to figure out what the f*@k is even going on in the impenetrable enigma of a game known as Myst.
Widely considered to be Nintendo's oft-neglected third major IP, we hop into the suit of galactic bounty hunter Samus Aran and discover what awaits in the classic NES platformer Metroid!
We are joined once again with our favorite Nintendhost LPTyger to discuss our... Less than favorite 3D platformer: Bubsy 3D: Furbitten Planet. Why would we want to subject ourselves to this, you may ask? For our wonderful, definitely-not-sadistic Patrons, of course! We do this because we love you.
The City of New York is under siege, and the only hope is... A creature most known for accosting pizza delivery drivers? Sure, why not. Save everyone from your evil doppelgänger with the power of pizza and yo-yos!
Nintendo has gained a bit of a reputation over the years for taking chances on what some might consider to be "gimmicks." Sometimes these pay off (see: the Wii) and sometimes they do not (see: this episode). Hunch over a table and smash your eyeholes into the viewfinder, 'cause we're talking about the Virtual Boy!
Tighten your body armor, load up that nail gun, and prepare yourself for MAXIMUM 90s EDGE, because we're rocket-jumping right into the classic PC FPS Quake by id Software!
At this point, we're convinced our Patrons are colluding to kill us slowly via exposure to terrible games. The quarterly PatronPoll results are in, the people have spoken, and they have chosen pain. Put on your black-rimmed glasses and join us as we recount our time spent "playing" Superman: The New Superman Adventures for the Nintendo 64.
Hoo boy, this one's a doozy. Adam of The Good, The Bad, & The Backlog podcast joins us once again (though it is his debut on the main show, huzzah!), this time to take a deep dive into the emotional rollercoaster that is NieR. Grab a box of tissues and get comfortable with moral ambiguity, 'cause this game pulls no punches.
Kade Call, host of the Gaming Memories podcast, joins us to chat about the game that many consider to be the forefather of all JRPGs: Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior for those of us outside Japan). Brush up on Ye Olde English, stock up on torches, and venture forth; the Dragonlord awaits!
It was only a matter of months ago when Chris decided to record a bonus episode, part of our typically Patron-exclusive RHGaiden series, with Patrons and friends of the show Adam of The Good, The Bad, & The Backlog podcast and Riku. It was mere days ago that we learned of Riku's sudden passing. Though this episode was meant to be put out at later date, we felt it only right to release it now, in his honor and memory. This one is for you, Riku; may it be a testament to your relentless passion and enthusiasm for gaming and all who enjoy it.
With the release of New Pokémon Snap for the Nintendo Switch, it only seems right that we hearken back to the original N64 title that started it all. It sure wasn't what Poké-fans were expecting at the time, but the feel-good photo romp soon became a beloved entry into the Pokéverse. Nintendhost LPTyger and special guest (and Pokémon Snap expert) Lynnsey join us to discuss this now-classic spin-off!
Final Fantasy month continues with the grandfather of them all: the original Final Fantasy for the NES / Famicom! Patron Lyle joins us once again to discuss this roleplaying milestone and whether it's one worth going back to decades later.
Note: Unfortunately, Chris experienced some technical issues with his microphone during this recording that we did not catch until after the fact, so the audio quality may not be up to our usual standard. We promise it'll be back to normal next episode!
It's days like this you get high on life, but we won't harsh your buzz: we're here to talk Final Fantasy V with Patron Saint and Four Job Fiesta Fanatic Lyle McKarns! But enough expository banter, listen to the show like men! And ladies! And ladies who dress like men!
Do you smell what RHP is cookin', brother!? We bring the cream of the crop, GoobZWN from the Secret Levels Podcast, to discuss what many consider to be some the best professional wrestling games of all time: THQ's efforts on the one and only Nintendo 64. Know your role and listen up!
By the power of the moon, we bring you the Japan-exclusive Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story RPG for the Super Famicom! Assisting us in this is not one, but TWO special guests: returning friend of the show Seamus Burke of Gray Man Games and Sailor Moon super fan (and co-host Chris' arguably better half) Meredith Coplien!
The latest Patron-selected episode topic is here, and marks the very first to be chosen by popular vote! Shaking up the usual show format a bit, we take turns counting down our top 5 retro games of all time. If you'd like to participate in the next quarterly PatronPoll, consider heading to gorpfans.com and donating at a tier of your choice!
Get your high heels locked and loaded, because we're taking the fight directly to the angelic legions with PlatinumGames' hyper-kinetic action brawler Bayonetta!
Special guest Ryan Trainor joins us once again, this time to talk Fist of the North Star... Well, kind of. While Japan got a Sega Master System FotNS licensed game, the rest of us got Black Belt. Something tells us we got the short end of the stick here. Is our hunch right? Listen in to find out!
2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the seminal Xbox FPS Halo: Combat Evolved! To help us with our retrospective, we're joined by very special guest Patrick Hickey Jr., author of the excellent book series The Minds Behind the Games. So hop into our Warthog, nerds, 'cause we're goin' Covenant-killin'!
It just wouldn't be Christmas without rogue mitochondria turning people into meat soup, would it? We give you an extra-long episode this holiday season, covering an oft-overlooked Playstation classic: the survival-horror-meets-JRPG that is Parasite Eve!
The latest Patron-selected episode topic is here! Deviating a bit from the usual show format, we roll a History check to provide a comprehensive look at Dungeons & Dragons video games through the years, all the way from its humble beginnings in 1974 to present day!
Chris, Shane, and Nintendhost LPTyger gush like a burst canister of neon-green TCRI toxic ooze about one of the best beat-em-ups of all time: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time for the Super Nintendo (oh, and Hyperstone Heist gets mentioned too).
Nintendhost LPTyger tags in once again, this time to help us conquer King K. Rule and recover all that pilfered potassium in Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System!
Grab your whip and tighten your headband, 'cause we're going vampire killin'! Nintendhost LPTyger joins us once again to discuss the title that began one of the most enduring game franchises the world has ever known: Castlevania for the Nintendo Entertainment System!
What better way to truly kick off Spooptober than with one of the most influential survival horror games of all time? Shane's a huge fan of the series, so he's got a whole lot to say on this one. Dim the lights, turn the radio dial to some soothing static, and wander into the fog of Silent Hill!
Wassup, muthaf*ckas!? Guest hosts Ginger and Willie of the Grand Rapidians Play Video Games podcast join us to discuss one of their favorite Wii lightgun games of all time: House of the Dead: Overkill!
