This podcast where Ashley and Chris, two game fans, bang on about games from their own personal gaming history whilst failing to avoid the conversational side streets that pop up. Each week, one of the pair presents a game from their childhood, alongside a potted history of its development and any personal stories linked to it.

If you can't read, write, or type, then this game may be just what you need! Chris and Ashley take on the challenge to play more than ten minutes of what, even by the standards of its day, must surely have been a tedious and uninspired attempt to gamify the art of typing. Why has Chris done this, we hear you ask! Well listen along and find out!

We roll with the punches this week in our first PlayStation 2 title, 2005's We Love Katamari! This game where you control a little guy rolling things up into a ball that gets progressively larger, it got Ashley through the hangover after his eighteenth birthday. Join us as we ramble on about this special time, self-consciously wacky games and a very unusual console with a crank.

If you're looking to beat Nintendo at their own game, they say you can't go too far wrong inviting Mickey Mouse along to help you. That's exactly what happened with the Sega Mega Drive in 1990. It might not have been Mickey's first foray into video games, but it's certainly considered one of his best. Link's at it again, but this time, he's got company! And a prosthetic arm. Is it prosthetic? Grafted? Yeah, let's go with that. A posse and a grafted arm. And batteries! Can't forget the batteries. Oh, and the Kinder(TM) Surprise(TM?) capsules full of useful goodies to build a whole fleet of ridiculous contraptions. Is that it? Of course it isn't! There's so much more to talk about with Tears of the Kingdom, and Chris and Ashley do just that in this week's episode. Come give it a listen!

Chris takes Ashley to the World of Balance this week for Final Fantasy VI, a sprawling sprite-filled SNES sensation that Chris played as a PlayStation port instead of the original. Crash Bandicoot did a lot of things, not least of which was catapulting a little-known mammalian specimen from relative obscurity to the height of ubiquity, as well as racking up a full-blown trilogy in a little over two heady years in the mid-90s. Where did they come from? Where did they go? It's a couple of questions that we've been pondering in our conversation about Banjo-Kazooie, a Rare-developed and now rarely-seen animal duo that made their first appearance on the Nintendo 64. In a time where character was king, this unlikely pair managed to make the right kind of splash. Come listen in to find out why!

If you're a parent of a tot that likes games, or are trying to get your child into what is unquestionably the best hobby ever, then this is for you! In an episode we recorded back in April 2021, Chris tells Ashley all about Thinkrolls this week, a iOS logic platformer that teaches nippers the basics of gaming. It's a great game - so much so that Ashley decides to play it while we record. Keep rolling, rolling, rolling to find out how we got on! Note: this one is from a while back and Ashley still can't remember the coding game he talks about at the 30 minute mark. Our apologies.

Whether you're a long-time Lego game fan, a sceptic of the series, or just new to the whole Lego games endeavour, The Skywalker Saga will almost certainly blow you away. Listen in to find out why.

The Simpsons was laying the stage for the rest of 90s pop culture before the decade even began, and in 1991 they took their first tentative steps into the gaming arena with not one, but two different titles. Have you ever wanted to blast your way through a flurry of protozoic lifeforms with little to no narrative reason for doing so? That's exactly what Chris and Ashley have been doing this week with the help of the Bitmap Brothers and their game, Xenon 2 for the Sega Master System. A fast-paced, chaotic take on the shoot'em up, the game apparently has the player leaping across epochs to thwart the destructive plans of the Xenites who, at least in the Master System version of the game, aren't really mentioned outside of the manual. Chris and Ashley have barely ever played any of the previous FromSoftware fare but, when the reviews started hitting throughout Thursday, Ashley started to get a little tingle he hadn't felt for quite some time and he plonked himself firmly on the bandwagon. Even then, though, he didn't anticipate that the game would impress him so thoroughly that he would absolutely have to talk to Chris about it. The Game Boy Advance was the console that just wouldn't stop, and Kuru Kuru Kururin was just one of the places it began when it released alongside the handheld in 2001. The game is a unique puzzley-mazey affair in which a pastel-coloured flock of bird cousins is kidnapped and the lone left-behind tasked with saving them. He ventures out in his helirin to navigate through a bunch of tight corridors in the hopes that his cousins will be at the other end. Future Cop LAPD is just like football (soccer for those that need it) in that it's a game of two very distinct halves and neither of your hosts is particularly good at it. We're straying into genuine cultural phenomenon territory for our third Christmas episode of 2021. Wii Sports and its console namesake came close to taking over the world in the late 2000s, with the former becoming the best selling game of all time, taking over all entertainment responsibilities at family gatherings across the globe for a solid few years. Nintendo captured new audiences and bridged generational gaps, and it was all in no small part because of Wii Sports. So come join us for a little trip back to 2006, find out what made the game so special, and whether it still manages to be something to write home about.

This week's game is a petrolhead's dream, or at least it might be - Chris and Ashley don't really know what one is, so it's really just a guess. But Super Monaco GP on the Sega Master System is a game about cars, and fast ones at that! Touted as a racing simulation game when it released in 1990, there's more than a little room for debate whether it hits the brief, and even more for whether it's worth anyone's time or not. You'll have to give it a listen to find out!

Chris completes a trilogy, of sorts, this week with his choice of Chicken Run on the Playstation. As he explains it, this is the third stealth-based experience on the PlayStation that he was playing alongside Metal Gear Solid, a game that has featured not once but twice on the show in the last month. Yes, it sounds odd to combine the two, but it does make an odd kind of sense, too, but you'll have to listen to find out exactly why!

Chris, as ever, is pushing the rules to breaking point this week and bringing what he calls a game but is actually a glorified tutorial for Metal Gear Solid, a title we discussed at length mere weeks ago. But who knows, maybe he can explain just why the VR Missions deserve almost an hour of your time, or maybe it will all crash and burn in catastrophic fashion. Listen in to find out!

Almost not making it out because Ashley was too scared to edit it, this week's episode is a celebration of all things spooktacular as Chris and Ashley tackle Splatterhouse 2, an early Mega Drive hit that comes packed to the gills with buckets of blood (albeit green), a mass of blunt weapons, and monsters galore. Will it scratch your supernatural itch in the run up to Halloween? Listen in to find out!

With a brand new iteration of Microsoft's Windows operating system on the horizon, Chris and Ashley's minds drift back to the early days of the platform and the hidden gem that is Minesweeper that sat there, unassuming, somewhere in the depths of the Start Menu. Anybody who ever touched a PC in the two decades either side of the millenium has played it (probably) and now Chris and Ashley are playing it again. Samus is back! At least she was in 1991 when Metroid II: The Return of Samus hit the Game Boy, and then again in 1998 when Ashley played it (and yes we know she's back again in Metroid Dread). This sequel to the hit NES is peculiar in a number of ways (that you'll have to listen to the episode to find out about, natch!) but we're certain it is worth anyone's time if they have even the slightest whiff of interest in games, so give us a listen to find out why!

We've both been a bit under the weather this week so our episode today was recorded a little while ago. Long before the epiphany Chris experienced with Starcraft, in the midst of his denial of all things strategy, Ashley took up the impossible task of convincing him to play the latest entry in one of the finest turn-based strategy game series in existence, Civilization VI. If Ashley had a quid for every time Chris has slandered the real time strategy genre then he'd probably have a minor fortune. However, turns out it was all completely baseless because Chris has hardly even touched an RTS, let alone played one for any length of time. So what better place to start than with StarCraft? Does the game have what it takes to turn Chris around on an entire genre he has reviled for his entire life? Listen in to find out!

Turns out not everyone in the whole world has played a Mega Man game like Ashley thought, because Chris had never touched one before. In a way, he still hasn't because Mega Man Battle Network isn't your Nana's Mega Man. The story of Marble Madness has a fair few interesting tidbits to it, many of which we discuss in this episode. What, you want one now? Okay, well it was one of the first games designed by industry titan Mark Cerny, before he went on to be the architect of Sony's PlayStation family of systems. Another? The dev team use ray-tracing tech to build the levels, a technology that is only now at the fore of gaming's conscious. If that's done the job of wetting your whistle, just press play and listen along for more!

Chris continues with his delusional insistence that "Sonic is okay, really" this week, bringing us a second slice of Sonic The Hedgehog (The Game). It's the second of three iterations of the blue blur's original outing he's made Ashley play, with only the Master System version outstanding.

Something tells us if that ends up on the podcast there's going to be serious words had between the two of them. But it is what it is, we suppose, and maybe the game really is okay, really. You'll just have to listen to the podcast and see, won't you?

If you've played Denki Blocks then you know why we're talking about it today. It's one of a vast array of excellent games that made the Game Boy Advance a compelling and worthwhile console to have, and the studio behind it (named after the game itself) was founded by four leading lights of DMA Design, the studio behind GTA and Lemmings, among many other gems.

The studio itself, one of the UK's most prolific having created more than 200 games over the last 20 years, has a fascinating story; just last year, they were the winners of the Scottish BAFTA for the game category. So join us to learn more as we delve deep into Denki!

Nintendo has a number of behemoths capable of rampaging their way through many a sales chart, but none come more rampant than this week's game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Welcome, gentle-folk, to the wonderful world of Disney on the Sega Mega Drive in the 1990s! It's a wonderful place to be, with lots of things to do.

This week, though, we're taking a jaunt through Mickey Mania, a beautiful rendition of the Disney art-style, and in a platforming game no less! It may not have been the first Disney title to capture their signature animation magic, but it's certainly one of the best!

As well as talking about the game at length, we take a detour into several other areas. Find out what other games were developed by Traveller's Tales, hear about Chris' competition spoils compared to Ashley's competition woes and listen to us talk about idle animations in platformers for far too long. Over the course of an hour, we discuss the fate of Alex following his fall from grace, the merits (or lack thereof) of different game controllers, and the mathematically correct way to show how rubbish Sonic the Hedgehog is compared to everyone else in the platform genre. If you already have plans for Valentine's Day 2020, cancel them now! Like a bolt from the blue delivered direct to your backsides, we've shifted our entire release schedule to bring you this Valentine's special. What better way to celebrate love than to listen to two grown men have an uncomfortable conversation about being hormone-addled teenagers, standing in their local Electronics Boutique, straining to subdue the lascivious urges driving them to reach for Leisure Suit Larry?

If that's not enough to tantalise you, get ready to hear as those same two grown men walk into every single sexual innuendo as if they'd been laid out like traps by Wile E Coyote himself. Or if your penchant isn't for punnery, perhaps we could entice you with talk of dating simulators, sexy dads, and bad boy games developers. All that packed into one little hour, just for you lot!

Happy February, everyone! To celebrate the leap year and the subsequent extra day we're gifted this month, we figured we'd give you exactly the same number of episodes as every other normal month, and this is the first of them. Don't complain, you've already got an extra day!

This week we take a look at Lemmings, a game scientifically proven to have cropped up in the life of every child born between 1984 and 1999 because it was made for every machine through the nineties you can think of. Did you have a Megadrive? You got Lemmings. SNES? You got Lemmings. Walkman? Lemmings on tape. Phillips CD-i? Yes, even you got Lemmings! Chris opted to play the game on an Acorn Archimedes personal computer, itself pilfered from work by by his Pop.

But, as always, that's not all! Over the course of the show we touch upon novelty dancing, copyright trolling, and the problem with passwords. We suspect that will have you salivating for the show, so grab your favourite podcast app and get listening!

Planes, trains, and automobiles! And boats. Oh, and hovercrafts and lorries. And canal boats? Is that right? Apparently it is! What? No automobiles? Are you serious? But we've already said that they're in it. What a joke. Let's try this again: All the transport solutions you could possibly want (except cars), squeezed into an enjoyable management simulation. Start off with just a unicycle and a wicker basket, delivering bread for your local baker, and work your way up to become the sinister, all-pervading transport conglomeration we all wish we could be. That's what this game is!

As is tradition, Chris and Ashley amble their way through an hour of conversation that is at once rambling and incisive. Listen in this week for some deep cuts on the dark predilections of The Sims players in the olden days, lots of Rollercoaster Tycoon-based chat, why Chris should have been playing Railroad Tycoon instead of this, and precisely how tall the fence behind Ashley's childhood home was! Exciting, we know, and that's just a vertical slice of all the goodness in this episode!

If you want to give Transport Tycoon a bash, head on over to OpenTTD and fill your boots.

Apologies for Ashley's grump at the beginning. He says it's hard to deal with Chris' unrelenting upbeat positivity in a world rapidly falling into decay. Happy Thursday!

It's Chrimbo Limbo, that annual lull between Christmas and New Year where you're so full of food, fizz and festive cheer that you might not want to move. Yes, you could play one of those spanking new games you were gifted, we wouldn't blame you. But why not spend an hour with us? Find your comfy chair and settle in for a cosy Christmas treat.

Our second Christmas special of 2019 sees Ashley take us back two whole decades with Pokémon Red for the Nintendo Game Boy, a grand RPG that barely fits into the confines of the tiny system.

Expect to hear about the surreal means by which Ashley obtained Pokémon Crystal, the sneak's guide to finding your Christmas presents and how to get away with using them before the big day, and the staggering cost of obtaining a Shadowless Charizard trading card.

So grab a bowl of Christmas pudding and your favourite tipple, hunker down in front of the fire, and while away an hour of this inbetween time with us.

PS Chris is very sorry for defining the word 'dearth' incorrectly during the episode. Very, very sorry. Don't write in.

What do we all think about when we think of Christmas? A bloke dressed up all fancy hurtling through the air at breakneck speed, of course. And it just so happens that's how Stargates work (what do you mean 'tenuous link'?).

Join us for the first of our festive treats, a surprise sprung on you like a sprout at a summer fayre, in which we discuss everything except Stargate, a puzzle game for the Game Gear because it is honestly just abominable. Awful. Think of the worst game you know and then forget that one and replace it with this. Honestly. Don't play it. But do listen to us discuss having played it. Especially if you want to know how Chris made his nana cry at Christmas.

So grab a mince pie and a pint of custard, snuggle into your favourite seat, and relax into the festive season with us.

LISTENING NOTE: we had a 'technical difficulty' with this episode and the sound quality isn't what we'd like it to be. Normal service is resumed from the next episode onwards!

There's perhaps nothing better heading into the festive season than to reflect on failure. Huge, catastrophic failures that lead to the decline of large corporations but that fail to puncture the hubris of the wrinkly walnut who heads it all up. That's the backdrop for this week's episode, in which we discuss Burnin' Rubber, a decent driving game on a doomed console that tanked Amstrad's hardware business.

Over the course of our hour, we'll touch on the Philips CD-i, discuss the etymology of the word 'romp', display our complete lack of understanding of racing and share a far-too-detailed comparison of the price of many classic consoles. Plus the episode ends on a horribly tortured metaphor. Lots to look forward to!

So if the prospect of a happy Christmas is leaving you too jolly, come commiserate and wallow with us in the sweet, sweet muck that is failure.

This game where you play as a sidekick to one of the most famous video game characters of all time in a slow-paced action-RPG-adventure! This week, Chris chose to talk Ashley through Tails' Adventure, released on the Game Gear in 1995.

While there is, of course, plenty of discussion about the game, a range of other subjects are covered from geocaching and Vinnie Jones to the now-infamous Middlemas and Link's catchphrase. Plus - we delve deep into the history of the dreaded 'Metroidvania' genre.

Does the game hold up? Is it worth playing now? What does the Queen think of other people's Christmas baubles? There's only one way to find out the answers - download / stream the episode immediately!

The New Batch! This action-adventure NES game where you play as a Mogwai attempting to thwart the ambitions of your burdensome Gremlin progeny. The game (and film) is populated by a cast of mostly zany but occasionally horrifying characters, all intent on your demise.

Join Chris and Ashley as they discuss Gremlins, the work of special FX maestro Chris Walas, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and so much more over the course of an hour.

Or, if you want to skip straight to watching an episode of Come Outside, click here.

Or maybe you'd like to keep up to date with all things Gremlins, in which case you might want to visit Gremlins Online.

When Ashley was young and acting up, his mum used to tell him he'd be lucky to get to his next birthday. Well now he's 31 and he's not only defied those expectations, he's also one half of a podcasting duo that has three episodes! Congratulations him.

Episode three is all about adventure games focussed through the lens of 1995's excellent Discworld, this game where you take on the role of Rincewind, a hapless wizard roving around the vastness of Ankh-Morpork trying to riddle out the mystery of a secret brotherhood intent on wreaking havoc with a dragon summoned from another dimension. The game has an unbelievable cast, with none other than Eric Idle as the voice of our hero.

So sit back, relax (unless you're driving, then pay attention), and listen to Chris and Ashley take a ramble through the annals of 90s adventure gaming and beyond.

We're back with episode 2 of This Game Where! This week Ashley chose the platform game Greendog: The Beached Surfer Dude, a platformer from the Mega Drive that has a strange Genesis (see what we did there?).

Heralding from the mysterious time that was 1992, the game sees you take on the role of Greendog, a surfer under the influence of an ancient Aztec curse. He must traverse the world to find the six pieces of Aztec treasure that will allow him to surf again.

Join us then to hear more about Greendog, and more than you might ever care to know about its creator, Rick Green.

So here it is! The first episode of This Game Where. You maybe aren't as excited as we are about it (yet!) but please do give it a listen and let us know what you think!

Chris had the honour of choosing our first game and he went for Toejam and Earl in Panic on Funkotron, a platformer which released for the Mega Drive in 1994 (or '93 if you were in North America.)

So join us for a look back at a game that many people regard as having definitely released for the Mega Drive and find out what we make of it!

And if Toejam and Earl doesn't float your boat, fear not! We also talk about Little Nemo in Dream World, Sonic and Knuckles, and Crusader of Centy, among many more!
