Super A'can - the console that could, but didn't
The Super A'can is a home game console released by Funtech in 1995 for the Taiwanese market. Only twelve games have been released for this system. For most people, the system was just too expensive, and being released in 1995 had to compete with CD-ROM based systems that were more convenient and powerful.
The Super A'can is based around the Motorola 68000 CPU, and has decent graphical capabilities. The machine can display 320x240 in 256 colors out of 32,768, but it's most impressive capability is its sprites. Sprites can be up to 256x256 in size, and the Graphics chip supports hardware scaling, rotating, and mosaic effects. Games were limited to 112Mbit on cartridge (14 MByte), while the competition using CD-ROM could fit games of up to 700MByte on a disk.
The controller uses a 9-pin male D-connector, similar to the Sega Genesis. The controller IC uses identical functionality as the Super Nintendo controller, with the select and start buttons swapped for the A'Can.
The manufacturer did plan for a CD-ROM attachment, but those plans never materialized.
