Nec PC-FX

The NEC PC-FX is a 32-bit home video game console made by NEC Home Electronics. It was released in Japan on December 23, 1994. It is the successor to the PC Engine, which is known as the TurboGrafx-16 in North America.

This machine was only released in Japan. The console is shaped like a tower PC, with the intention that it would be similarly upgradable. The NEC PC-FX is a relatively rare console. Games made for the PC-FX were based on popular Japanese Animes.

This was NEC's last home video game console, it was discontinued in February of 1998, ending an era of NEC game consoles in the Japanese market.

The PC-FX uses a HU 62 series 32-bit system board, an LSI chip, and the 32-bit V-810 Reduced Instruction Set CPU (RISC).

The machine uses a new Video Color Encoder, the HuC6271, which allows for 16.77 Million colors. Interestingly NEC chose to use the same Video Display Controller, the HuC6270, as in the TurboGrafx and PC-Engine line. This limited the graphics resolution to 341x240. Due to the large color range, this still resulted in stunning graphics with superior full motion video quality over all other fifth generation consoles. The machine is able to decompress 30 JPEG images per second, while playing digitally recorded audio, which is essentially a form of Motion JPEG. Interestingly the PC-FX does not have a polygon graphics processor, unlike many of the other fifth generation consoles. NEC's reasoning for this was that the polygon processors were relateively low-powered, resulting in blocky graphics. By using pre-rendered polygons that could be displayed using the superior full-motion video capabilities, NEC produced much better quality graphcis. For Sound the NEC PC-FX used two ADPCM channels and six 5-bit sample channels for stereo sound.

The PC-FX uses CD-ROM as its storage medium. The game controller is virtually identical to the DUO-RX controller, but the rapid fire switches have been replaced with mode A/B switches. There is also a PC-FX Mouse which is used in certain strategy games, such as Farland Story FX and Power DoLLS FX.

NEC PC-FX Game Accelerator (PC-FX GA)

NEC also released the PC-FX GA ("game accelerator") for PC-9800 and DOS/V computers. The PC-9800 version is a combination of two cards, while the DOS/V variant uses a single ISA card. Both cards integrate an additional 3D chipset (Kubota/Hudson HuC6273) over the regular PC-FX. Unlike most computer graphics accelerators of the time the PC-FX GA outputs over a separate video connection rather than from the PC's interface itself. Games are still booted using the DOS prompt requiring one to use either a second monitor or an input switcher. The relatively high price of the card, coupled with the state of the PC-FX itself, resulted in the card selling poorly, below even the sales of the dedicated PC-FX unit.
