Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), was a very popular 8-bit third-generation home video game console. It was originally released in 1983 as the Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan, and redesigned for the American market as the Nintendo Entertainment System.

The video game market had just crashed in 1983 and Nintendo did not want to create a console that looked like a toy for the American market. Instead they opted for a designed modeled after a VCR system. The cartridge slot was hidden behind a door that flipped up, and the cartridge itself would have to be pushed in and down, just like a video cassette would load for the VCRs at the time. This strategy turned out to be hugely successful.

After the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo released a redesigned version of the original NES, and branded it the NES AV. This design was ultimately discontinued in 2003.
